Homework for Monday 2/19 - experimenting with first species counterpoint
Use Adam Ballato's CF (the first one on my post "Student CFs"). Write a counterpoint underneath it. Write ONE note below each of Adam's notes. Experiment to see what works well and what does not. We will sing and evaluate some of these in class.
When we write a counterpoint exercise where there is one note of counterpoint for each note of the CF (or the counterpoint is 1:1), it is called "First species counterpoint."

Choose one of the following major keys (Bb, D, Eb, A). Compose a melody/pitch pattern using the following criteria:
- “No rhythm” - tune is all whole notes
- Length: 10-16 notes
- First note is DO
- Last two notes are RE-DO
- You can sing it (you may be called on to do so)
- Mostly stepwise
- Only uses diatonic notes (no accidentals/notes outside the key)
- No notes immediately repeated (you may return to a note after intervening notes)

Video to watch for Monday, Feb. 5
Here is a video in which I explain roman numerals
(in major keys) and the chord names (Tonic, dominant, etc.)
I also give several tasks for you to practice. In my voice-over, I direct you to pause and try it around 6:10, where it says "APPLY your understanding," around 7:40, and once more at 9:14. I would like you to do all of these.
Note, this was originally an enhanced podcast with images and audio. If you'd like to download it, you can do so by clicking here.
UPDATE: You now have a handout for the "Apply your understanding" exercises. It's the side that says "Theory 1 - Worksheet for video "TH1 IntroRNs". You don't need to do the other side (yet).
